The Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) has proposed reductions in electricity tariffs from July to December 2023, primarily targeting domestic consumers. Stakeholder consultations led by the Public Utilities Commission of Sri Lanka (PUCSL) are underway to gather feedback and ensure a fair tariff structure.

Under the proposed tariff structure, significant reductions are planned for the first 30 units of electricity consumed. The energy charge per unit would decrease from Rs. 30 to Rs. 25, benefiting low consumption users. Additionally, the fixed charge for this consumption block would be reduced from Rs. 400 to Rs. 250, providing further relief to consumers.

For the consumption block of 31-60 units, the rate would be revised from Rs. 37 to Rs. 36, offering marginal savings. Similarly, for the range of 61-90 units, the rate would decrease to Rs. 39 from Rs. 42. The fixed charge for these categories would also be reduced by Rs. 50, providing additional respite to consumers.

The proposed tariff reductions also extend to the religious category. Consumers utilizing electricity for religious purposes would experience lower rates, with reductions from Rs. 30 to Rs. 25 for the 0-30 units consumption block and from Rs. 42 to Rs. 39 for the 31-90 units consumption block.

It is important to note that the proposed tariff reductions do not apply to consumption blocks above 90 units, specifically the 91-180 and above 180 units categories. Consumers falling into these higher consumption brackets should be mindful of the unchanged rates and adjust their electricity usage accordingly. Additionally, there are no changes in rates for Time of Use (TOU) customers and they will not benefit from this change.
