Effective date: October 4, 2026
Numbers.lk ("we", "us", "our") publishes data, reporting and tools about Sri Lanka at https://numbers.lk and its subdomains, including speed.numbers.lk and tools.numbers.lk (together, the "Service"). We also run the Numbers.lk Facebook Page and a Facebook app that connects that Page to the Service.
This policy explains what personal data we handle, why, who we share it with, and what you can do about it. If anything here is unclear, write to admin@numbers.lk.
Summary
- You can read Numbers.lk without an account.
- We collect an email address and name only if you create an account.
- If you comment on a Numbers.lk Facebook post, your public comment and the name Facebook shows with it may appear under the related write-up on our site. Deleting the comment on Facebook removes it from our site.
- We do not sell personal data.
Data we collect
Data you give us
- Account details. If you register, we collect your name, email address and a password. If you sign in with Google, we receive your name, email address and profile picture from Google instead of a password.
- Speed test details. When you run a test on speed.numbers.lk you may tell us your district, divisional secretariat, GN division, internet provider and package, and device type.
- Messages. If you email us, we keep the message and your address so we can reply.
Data collected automatically
- Usage data. Your IP address, browser and device type, the pages you visit, the time of your visit and the page that referred you.
- Speed test measurements. Download and upload speed, ping, jitter and packet loss, together with your IP address and the approximate location, internet provider and network number derived from it. If you allow your browser to share your location, we also record those coordinates. Results shown on the public speed map are placed only approximately (within about 200 metres) and never show your IP address.
- Likes. When you like a write-up we add one to its counter. The fact that you liked it is stored only in your own browser.
Data we receive from Facebook
We use a Facebook app, through Meta's Graph API, to manage the Numbers.lk Facebook Page. The app can only act on our own Page. It does not ask you to log in with Facebook and it cannot see your profile, friends, private messages or anything you post elsewhere on Facebook.
Through the app we:
- publish posts to the Numbers.lk Page;
- read the comments and replies people leave on those posts;
- reply to those comments as Numbers.lk.
For each comment on a Page post that we have linked to a write-up, we receive and store:
- the text of the comment;
- the name Facebook displays for the commenter, when Facebook provides it;
- the commenter's Facebook user ID for that Page, when Facebook provides it;
- the date and time of the comment, its number of likes, and its link on Facebook;
- which comment it replies to, if it is a reply.
We do not receive profile pictures, email addresses, phone numbers or any other profile information.
How we use data
- To run the Service: show pages, keep you signed in, remember preferences, and count likes.
- To show Facebook comments under the write-up they are about. We display the comment text, the commenter's displayed name, the time and the like count, with a link back to the conversation on Facebook. The Facebook user ID is never displayed or published.
- To read and answer comments on our Facebook Page.
- To publish aggregated internet speed statistics and the speed map.
- To understand how the Service is used and to fix problems.
- To show advertising that helps fund the Service.
- To prevent abuse and meet legal obligations.
We do not use Facebook data for advertising, we do not build profiles of commenters, and we do not combine Facebook data with any other data we hold about you. We do not sell personal data, and we do not share Facebook data with anyone except the service providers that host it for us.
Cookies and local storage
We and our partners use cookies and your browser's local storage to:
- keep you signed in;
- remember preferences and which write-ups you have liked;
- remember your speed test details between tests;
- measure traffic and how the Service is used (Google Tag Manager and the analytics tags it loads, and PostHog);
- show short optional surveys (PostHog);
- show and measure ads (Google AdSense).
You can block or delete cookies in your browser settings. Some features, such as staying signed in, will not work without them. You can control ad personalisation by Google at https://adssettings.google.com.
Who we share data with
We share personal data only with providers that help us run the Service, and only as far as they need it:
- Cloudflare hosts the Service and our databases.
- Google provides analytics, advertising and Google sign-in.
- PostHog provides product analytics, session recordings and surveys. It receives usage data and, if you are signed in, your account ID, but not your name or email address. Text you type into forms is masked in recordings.
- IPinfo receives your IP address when you open the speed test, to estimate your location and internet provider.
- Meta operates Facebook, where the comments are originally posted. Meta's handling of your data is covered by its own privacy policy: https://www.facebook.com/privacy/policy.
We may also disclose data when the law requires it, or when it is necessary to protect the rights, safety or property of Numbers.lk, our users or the public.
How long we keep data
- Facebook comments. We refresh our copy from Facebook about every hour for recent posts and once a day for older ones. Each refresh replaces our copy completely, so a comment that has been deleted or hidden on Facebook disappears from our site and our database at the next refresh. If we unlink a post from a write-up, all its stored comments are deleted immediately.
- Account details. Kept until you ask us to delete your account.
- Speed test results. Kept so that we can publish long-term statistics. You can ask us to delete a result.
- Usage data. Kept by our analytics and hosting providers according to their own retention settings.
Deleting your data
Facebook comments
You can remove your comment from Numbers.lk in either of these ways:
- Delete the comment on Facebook. It will be removed from our site and database at the next refresh: usually within an hour, and at most within a day.
- Email admin@numbers.lk with a link to the comment or the write-up it appears under. We will remove it and confirm to you within 30 days.
If you want everything we hold from your Facebook comments deleted, email admin@numbers.lk from any address, tell us the name shown on your comments, and we will delete all matching records and confirm when it is done.
Everything else
To delete your account, a speed test result or any other personal data we hold about you, email admin@numbers.lk. We may need to confirm your identity before acting on the request.
Your rights
Under Sri Lanka's Personal Data Protection Act, No. 9 of 2022, and similar laws elsewhere, you may have the right to:
- ask what personal data we hold about you and receive a copy;
- have inaccurate data corrected;
- have your data deleted;
- object to or withdraw consent for how we use it.
To use any of these rights, email admin@numbers.lk. We will respond within 30 days.
Security
We limit access to personal data to the staff who need it, keep access tokens and passwords out of public code and logs, and send data over encrypted connections. No system is perfectly secure, so we cannot guarantee absolute security.
International transfers
Our providers store and process data on servers outside Sri Lanka. By using the Service you understand that your data may be transferred to and processed in other countries, where data protection laws may differ from those where you live.
Links to other sites
The Service links to other websites, including Facebook. We are not responsible for their content or privacy practices. Please read their policies.
Children
The Service is not directed at anyone under 18, and we do not knowingly collect personal data from children. If you believe a child has given us personal data, contact us and we will delete it.
Changes to this policy
We may update this policy. When we do, we will post the new version on this page and change the effective date at the top. For significant changes we will also post a notice on the Service.
