Tuesday, August 20, 2024 - Sri Lanka has set a new record for the world's longest postage stamp, surpassing the previous record held by Kyrgyzstan. The stamp, measuring an impressive 205 millimeters (8.1 inches), was issued to commemorate the Sri Dalada Perahera, a significant cultural festival in the country.
The Sri Dalada Perahera is an annual procession held in Kandy, Sri Lanka, where the sacred tooth relic of the Buddha is paraded through the streets. This festival is a testament to the country's rich cultural heritage and Buddhist culture, attracting many locals and tourists each year.
Prior to the Sri Lanka's record-breaking stamp, Philippines held the record for the world's longest stamp for the stamp measuring 200 millimeters issued on January 30, 2023 in celebration of the 126th Philippine Independence.
Prior to today, the longest stamp in Sri Lanka was one commemorating the Viceroy Luxury coal-powered steam train, marking its 25 years of service. Printed in 2011, the stamp measures 123mm in length and 30mm in width. It was introduced at the Rambukkana Railway Station under the patronage of former Post and Telecommunication Minister Jeewan Kumarathunga and former Transport Minister Kumara Welgama. The Viceroy Luxury coal-powered steam train began its journey in 1986.
