Wildlife Dept Rejects Request for 175 More Jeeps in Yala Sri Lanka 🇱🇰

⭕ 500 safari jeeps currently operate inside Yala National Park 🇱🇰

⭕ Operators requested +175 new vehicles, but the Wildlife Department rejected the request due to overcrowding, ecological pressure, and vehicle-induced wildlife disturbances

⭕ Officials warn that excess vehicle movement alters animal behaviour, increases stress levels, and disrupts natural habitats

⭕ Even though this is a good step, limiting new entries creates a monopoly for existing operators, reducing competition and keeping prices artificially high

⭕ Daily jeep limits or time-slot caps are better alternatives than permanently restricting new licensed entrants

⭕ The Government should also consider the gradual introduction of electric or petrol-hybrid jeeps to reduce emissions and noise, similar to African parks that use electric Land Rovers / Land Cruisers

⭕ Govt can begin with a quota for eco-friendly vehicles and gradually increase it for safari fleets, supporting sustainable tourism and stronger wildlife protection
