Sri Lanka in numbers, context, and plain English.

@numberslka

Dr. Anil Jayantha would have a point if Sri Lanka 🇱🇰 were China 🇨🇳.

⭕️ Sri Lanka has an $8 billion trade deficit and total external debt of over $50 billion.

⭕️ A weaker rupee may help sectors like exports in theory, but Sri Lanka imports far more than it exports. Depreciation will result in higher import costs, higher debt repayment costs, more inflation, and greater pressure on the economy.

⭕️ For a debt-ridden, import-dependent economy like Sri Lanka, the combined macroeconomic impact of rupee depreciation is inescapably negative. There is no way around it.

  3. Past mistakes are not “immaterial” when they continue to shape present economic vulnerabilities. Ignoring historical policy failures is exactly how countries repeat crises. Your level of market intelligence appears poor because you continue to apply generic textbook theories without properly considering Sri Lanka’s actual economic structure, external debt burden, import dependency, and market realities. Markets respond to fundamentals, not ideology. Time is running out. Time to move on. You guys are armatures. Time for you to isolate the 3% . .

  10. It is time for you all to learn how to respond when a crisis hit, we all know it’s external shock, but don’t try to fool the people telling the opposite.

  13. Yes, if we can make things in Srilanka and export them , it will be cheaper than before in the international market. Similarly if we could sacrifice the profit in hotel and tourism services it will be much cheaper for the tourist to come here. Finally un wanted imports will come down.
