WORLD BANK UPGRADES 🇱🇰 SRI LANKA TO UPPER-MIDDLE-INCOME STATUS

⭕ The World Bank reclassified 🇱🇰 Sri Lanka from lower-middle-income to upper-middle-income status, based on its 2025 gross national income per person.

⭕ Under the World Bank’s fiscal 2027 limits, upper-middle-income economies have a GNI per person between $4,636 and $14,375.

⭕ 🇱🇰 Sri Lanka’s 2025 Atlas GNI per person was $4,670, placing the country $34 above the $4,636 upper-middle-income cutoff.

⭕ The band includes 59 economies, including 🇨🇳 China, 🇲🇾 Malaysia, 🇹🇭 Thailand, 🇮🇩 Indonesia, 🇵🇭 the Philippines, 🇻🇳 Vietnam, 🇧🇷 Brazil, 🇲🇽 Mexico and 🇿🇦 South Africa.

⭕ 🇲🇻 Maldives is the only other country in the region listed in the upper-middle-income category alongside 🇱🇰 Sri Lanka.

⭕ 🇱🇰 Sri Lanka’s real GDP grew by 5% in 2025, supported by a rebound in industries and growth in financial and tourism services.

⭕ The new classification applies from July 2026 to June 2027.
