Sri Lanka's 🇱🇰 Metro Bus Project Expands: Seven New Routes Announced

⭕ One of the new government’s most widely welcomed initiatives, the Metro Bus project is now moving towards full implementation, marking one of Sri Lanka’s most promising efforts in recent decades to modernize and revitalize urban public transport.

⭕ Following an initial pilot involving 10 low-floor buses, the project is now moving into a wider Colombo-area rollout with seven newly announced routes.

➡️ Kesbewa → Pettah
➡️ Kadawatha → Makumbura
➡️ Battaramulla → Ekala
➡️ Dematagoda → Panadura
➡️ Makumbura → Pettah
➡️ Millennium City → Colombo Fort
➡️ Kollupitiya Circular Route

⭕ The rollout includes 104 imported low-floor buses, designed to improve access for elderly passengers and persons with disabilities.

⭕ The Cabinet approved 50 more low-floor buses a 50% reorder on the initial 100-bus contract to support the network’s expansion.

⭕ Beyond Colombo, expansion is planned for Kandy, Galle, and Jaffna, selected on the basis of passenger demand and their function as regional transport and tourism hubs.

⭕ The network will incorporate real-time fleet tracking, tap-in/tap-out fare payment, live arrival information displays, and centralized operations management.

⭕ The initiative is positioned as a step toward a more organized, accessible, and data-driven alternative to Sri Lanka's currently fragmented urban bus system.

  1. To make a recommendation . Your initiative to improve the public transport system in the Nation is most welcome. However Private bus operators have invested in many vehicles. Which are actually Lorry chassies. Why not stop the import of all forms of Lorries to the Country for a long period of time and instead purchase all the Lorry chassie buses from the private operators .give them also permission to operate fully Air - conditioned buses which are proper bus chassies. Won't this further quicken an effective, comfortable public transport system in the Nation. Think about it.

  2. Hope you will maintain and manage the whole system to be efficient as this is public expectation and after all it is their money too.

  11. This Metro Bus project is a very positive move by the Government to ease the present Traffic congestion in Colombo Metropolitan area and then expand the same concept to our regional towns. Hope the concerned authorities will revive and bring back the cancelled Metropolitan Light Railway system as soon as it is possible. If the previous Jaica funded project didn't get cancelled, by now Malabe/Colombo Fort line would have been in operation.

  19. Very good. In the future if you could import smaller, comfortable buses then more routes could be had. You could ask bus gamunu too to import these buses otherwise the poor chap will always have stomach upsets.

  22. Now the private bus drivers who don't care a rap about the elderly boarding or getting off buses can take a BREAK from their bad BRAKING, OVERTAKING, RACING AND CHEWING AND SPITTING BETAL

  24. I can only say from my experience, who is maintaining these vehicles? It's hard to find good mechanics for docking and running repairs. No one works for 60,000 rupees. With frequent technical failures and accidents, it's time for special technical schools. A good transport service is welcome, but we know Sri Lanka lacks a maintenance system.
