🚂 458 Drivers Needed, Only 246 in Service: "One-Theory-Fits-All" Policy Derails Railways 🇱🇰

⭕ The engine-driver shortage isn't new—it's been building for 10+ years.
• March 2025 was the first approval in over a decade to recruit drivers (140).
⭕ Even once hired, new drivers will not be able to take the controls for up to 3-3½ years due to training requirements.
⭕ The issue created by the rigid 10-year grade-transition gap in government technical service is the root cause of why people were not hired for years. PSC (Public Services Commission) mandates like these stifle government service, and nearly every government department has some grievance against the PSC due to its enforcement of archaic policies.
⭕ Most of the strikes seen in government services today have the PSC somewhere in the background. When issues arise, the typical government response has been to avoid concrete solutions—kicking the can down the road until the problem grows into a major crisis.
⭕ These institutions must adopt a more practical, problem-focused approach instead of "one theory fits all." Sri Lanka need a faster, department-specific system to manage this. Government should lead the way.
