Sri Lanka’s Local Government Elections are Today – May 6th 🇱🇰

Here are some interesting facts about the last election:
⭕ In 2024, the NPP secured the highest vote count ever recorded in Sri Lanka’s general election history: 6,863,186 votes, surpassing the SLPP’s 2020 record of 6,853,693.
⭕ Except for Paddiruppu (Digamadulla), where the NPP fell short by 722 votes (15%) compared to its presidential tally, the party gained votes across 159 polling divisions and 22 postal vote counts.
⭕ In the Jaffna polling division, the party recorded a 314.73% gain, while the largest raw vote increase came from Nuwara Eliya – Maskeliya, with an increase of 33,325 votes.
⭕ Despite a 69% voter turnout, down from 79% in the presidential election, the NPP’s vote count surged by approximately 23%, with 1.2 million additional votes.
The NPP shattered records nationally in the last election, but local elections are a different battlefield. Will the grassroots echo the national trend—or push back with a different voice?
