Sri Lanka's Mini-Conclaves: Mayor Elections Coming Next Week 🇱🇰

While cardinals lock themselves in the Sistine Chapel for #Conclave2025 to pick the next Pope today, Sri Lanka’s local councils will have their own “mini-conclaves” next week to pick mayors—where no party crossed 50%.

⭕ According to Sri Lanka law, if no group secures half the seats in Local Government, the Commissioner of Local Government must call the first meeting within 7 days and preside over the mayoral vote by councillors.

As the saying goes: "If you go in as a pope to come out as a cardinal" - many "mayors" entering these mini-conclaves may well exit as just councilors.
