Sri Lanka 🇱🇰 vs U.S. Tariffs: Garment Sector Faces Long-Term Risk

⭕️ Sri Lanka has held two rounds of virtual discussions with the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative in an effort to address reciprocal tariffs imposed by the U.S., - Deputy Economic Development Minister Anil Jayantha
However, the signals from the U.S. side are not very promising..
⭕️ Jamieson Greer, a top trade official from the Trump administration, stated during his ongoing testimony before the U.S. Senate—while responding to a question from Senator Lankford about the impact of tariffs on the garment and textile sector in Asia—that the U.S. is laying the groundwork for a long-term strategy to shift garment production out of Asia and into the Western Hemisphere.
⭕️ Greer emphasized that the administration has no current plans to offer exclusions or exemptions, even in the short term, as the goal is to shift production out of the region entirely. He stated that businesses should make decisions with this long-term outlook in mind.
⭕️ Apparel is Sri Lanka’s top export to the U.S. This shift in U.S. trade policy could have significant consequences for Sri Lanka's economy. The industry need to explore alternative markets and adjust to this evolving trade landscape.
