🐘 Tragic Toll of Human-Elephant Conflict in Sri Lanka 🇱🇰
2024 saw 386 elephant deaths due to:
⭕ 81 gunshots
⭕ 56 electrocutions
⭕ 51 explosives in food (‘hakka patas’)
⭕ 11 train accidents, 10 drownings, 7 poisonings & 7 agro-well falls
🔴 Human fatalities: 154
⭕ Most elephants killed were young, further threatening the population's future. Habitat loss & poor coexistence measures exacerbate the crisis.
