#OnThisDay in 2004, the Boxing Day tsunami struck, one of the deadliest natural disasters in recorded history. A massive earthquake of magnitude 9.1-9.3 off the coast of Sumatra triggered a tsunami that devastated 14 countries, claiming over 230,000 lives across Asia and beyond. 🌊🙏
⭕ Sri Lanka 🇱🇰 was among the hardest-hit nations, losing over 35,000 lives, with countless others injured and displaced. Entire communities were destroyed in what remains the largest natural disaster in the country's history.
⭕ Today, 20 years on, we honor the memory of those who lost their lives while reflecting on the resilience and strength of the survivors. 🌊🙏
