🚨 Advanced Level Education in Sri Lanka: Issues with Absenteeism and Tuition Culture 🇱🇰

⭕ Prime Minister & Education Minister Dr. Harini Amarasuriya calls for an investigation into rising absenteeism among Advanced Level students. This issue persists for over 20 years.
⭕ Teachers teach in classrooms, but many students opt to focus on their own work or skip school altogether.
⭕ Rural schools in areas like Monaragala, Badulla, and Polonnaruwa often allow Grade 13 students to attend tuition classes in cities like Nugegoda and Gampaha. Students are marked "present" to meet the 80% attendance requirement.
⭕ This practice undermines the Z-score-based district quota system, rendering it less meaningful in ensuring fair university admissions.
⭕The A/L exam is highly competitive, but government teachers are often neither capable nor motivated to deliver the required standard. As a result, parents and students rely heavily on private classes.
Students need to utilize the limited time available to prepare for the exam as effectively as possible. Consequently, they avoid spending time on sports, various societies, and other extracurricular activities and are unwilling to attend subpar teaching at school. This is the real reason they are not attending school.
