624 Vacancies Remain Unfilled at Attorney General's Department 🇱🇰

⭕ Nearly half of the positions at the Attorney General's Department are vacant, with 624 vacancies as of December 31, 2023.

⭕ The department had an approved cadre list of 1,295, but only 671 positions were filled, leaving 48% of the workforce vacant.

⭕ The large number of vacancies has made it “very difficult to perform daily activities successfully,” with senior positions such as Senior State Counsel and State Counsel having 53 and 77 vacancies, respectively.

⭕ According to senior official of the department despite recruiting 37 new State Counsel in 2024, only 3 remain with the department, with the rest resigning to go into private practice, citing lack of infrastructure facilities outside Colombo.
