📊 Sri Lanka's Govt Vehicle Fleet: Inefficiencies, Fuel Pilferage, and the Case for Going Electric 🇱🇰🚗

⭕ The gov recently decided to auction off 254 ultra-luxury, low-fuel-consumption
vehicles from the state fleet – an excellent decision to reduce unnecessary costs.
Here are a few key facts about the gov fleet:
⭕ The government owns approximately 82,000 vehicles, with ~76,000 operational and ~5,500 non-operational.
⭕ The cost of running 1km in a government vehicle is Rs. 300–500, while leasing vehicles from private entities could bring this down to Rs. 100 per km.
⭕ Switching to private leasing or adopting new measures could save the government Rs. 20 billion annually.

⭕ It is a well-known fact that it’s hard to find a vehicle in the gov fleet with fuel efficiency above 6 km/l on the record. The reasons? An outdated fleet, poor maintenance, and, most notably, rampant fuel pilferage by drivers exploiting fuel quotas.
💡 The Solution: Gradual Electrification of the Gov Fleet
✅ Electric vehicles offer significantly lower maintenance costs.
✅ Transitioning to EVs would eliminate fuel pilferage entirely.
✅ Departments can install solar-powered charging stations, creating a sustainable and cost-efficient energy source for the fleet, saving billions more annually.
A transition like this is not just about cost savings; it is a sustainable step toward modernizing the fleet and ensuring efficient government service.
