Sri Lanka Banking Sector: Q3 2024 Performance Highlights 🇱🇰🏦

The Sri Lankan banking sector performed exceptionally well in Q3 2024, registering a growth of 31%+ over the last three months.
Historically, the All Share Price Index (ASPI) and the Banking Sector Index have experienced downward adjustments following Presidential Elections. However, 2024 has been different, with the sector showing considerable growth.
⭕ The "Big Three" — Commercial Bank, HNB, and Sampath Bank — reported total asset gains of 4.1%, 3.7%, and 9.6%, respectively, by the end of Q3.
⭕ Among the top banks, Commercial Bank led growth with a rate of 118%, followed by Pan Asia Bank at 78% and Sampath Bank at 49%.
⭕ The sector's fundamentals remained strong, with banks maintaining a robust Tier 1 Capital Ratio exceeding 15%, providing a substantial capital buffer against unforeseen challenges.
⭕ The sector remained undervalued, with most banking stocks trading below their book value (BV). Mid-tier banks, especially Pan Asia Bank, stood out with 78% reported growth and the lowest P/E ratio in the sector at 4.29 (as of November 27, 2024), outperforming peers.
The resilience and undervaluation of the sector have made it an attractive choice for investors in 2024/2025.
