🇱🇰 Sri Lanka to import 70,000 MT of rice:

NPP's governance faces early tests: campaigning vs. governing.

⭕ Despite the reported surplus production Farmers have no paddy, and consumers have no rice. - Minister Wasantha Samarasinghe

⭕ The government plans to import 70,000 MT (ceiling) of rice per month, ~ 1/2 of Sri Lanka's monthly consumption, through Sathosa and STC.

⭕ The imported rice is expected to be available by December 15 and will be sold at Rs. 220 /Kg.

⭕Despite promises not to import rice, the government was forced to make the call due to the severe shortage. It will be interesting to see how the current government handles paddy purchases when they take full control of the cycle starting next January (Maha harvest) in order to fulfill their promise.
