The National Transport Commission (NTC) has given permission to increase bus fares by 22 percent with effect from midnight today.

Accordingly, the minimum bus fare has been increased to Rs. 40 from Rs. 32, according to the National Transport Commission.

The annual bus fare revision takes effect on July 1, and the price increase has been made accordingly.

Bus fares have been increased on four occasions this year alone. During the discussion on Tuesday (28) the private bus owners requested a 30% and 20% fare increase. But with the calculation considering the twelve criteria, the bus fare has been increased by 22%

According to National Transport Commission (NTC) Director-General Nilan Miranda, If the fuel prices are increased by more than 10% in the future, the bus fare will be increased again.

In 2018-19, the usual 1-2 km 3-wheel hire cost was around Rs.40 - Rs.80. Now the bus fares have reached that level.
