The Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) is set to announce MP Namal Rajapaksa as their presidential candidate for the 2024 elections. This comes after prominent businessman Dhammika Perera withdrew his candidacy, citing personal reasons.
### Dhammika Perera Withdraws
Reports from Lankadeepa reveal that Dhammika Perera, who was initially expected to be the SLPP candidate, informed the party of his decision to withdraw in a letter addressed to SLPP General Secretary Sagara Kariyawasam. Perera’s withdrawal has been attributed to personal reasons and certain circumstances that led him to reconsider his candidacy.

Support from the Rajapaksa Camp
Former Ambassador of Sri Lanka to Russia, Udayanga Weeratunga, a close associate of the Rajapaksa family, confirmed the news. Weeratunga mentioned that Namal Rajapaksa is ready to step in as the party's candidate following Perera's withdrawal. “If Dhammika does not agree, our Namal is ready,” Weeratunga stated.
Official Announcement
The official announcement of the SLPP’s presidential candidate is expected to be made on Wednesday, August 7. Former President Mahinda Rajapaksa has urged SLPP supporters to back the party’s decision, emphasizing unity and support for the chosen candidate.
This move is seen as a strategic decision by the SLPP to consolidate support and present a strong candidate for the upcoming presidential elections. Namal Rajapaksa, with his political experience and familial ties, is anticipated to be a formidable candidate in the race for the presidency.
