The ferry service connecting Nagapattinam, India, and Kankesanthurai, Sri Lanka, which was set to resume on May 13th, 2024, with a round-trip cost per passenger of approximately 35,000 Sri Lankan Rupees (LKR), was postponed to the 17th and is now indefinitely delayed with no time frame for restarting.

The ferry service was initially launched in October 2023 but was limited to 4 trips, likely due to high operational costs and fees. To address this issue, now the Government of India has decided to bear the cost of applicable taxes and other charges, amounting to over 25 million LKR per month for a period of one year.

According to the booking website, the planned ferry service has been delayed due to "unavoidable technical compliances and adverse weather conditions." The operators say that the ferry service will commence shortly however the customers those who have purchased tickets will receive a full refund.
