Former U.S. President Donald Trump has been indicted in New York, making him the first former U.S. president to face criminal charges

A grand jury in the state of New York in the United States has voted to indict former President Donald Trump on criminal charges related to his involvement in a $130,000 payment to adult film actress Stormy Daniels. The payment, which was arranged by Trump's former lawyer Michael Cohen in 2016, was made in exchange for Daniels' silence about an alleged extramarital sexual encounter with Trump.

In 2018, Michael Cohen, a former private lawyer and fixer for Donald Trump, was sent to jail after pleading guilty to campaign finance violations. Initially, Cohen claimed that he had paid adult film actress Stormy Daniels using his own money and had not been directed by Trump's company or campaign to do so. He further asserted that Trump had never reimbursed him for the payment.

However, Cohen later contradicted both of these statements under oath, stating that Trump had in fact directed him to make the payment and had reimbursed him. At the time, the top federal prosecutor in Manhattan, Geoffrey Berman, did not charge Trump with a crime related to the matter.

Fast forward four years later, and the new district attorney of Manhattan, Alvin Bragg, has decided to bring charges against Trump for this exact matter. While the specific charges are not yet known.

Former President Trump, who has now been indicted, will go through the same process as any other criminal defendant. This process includes being fingerprinted and photographed, answering basic questions such as name and birthdate, and being arraigned. It is unclear at this point what the specifics of his arraignment will be and when it will take place.

The fate of former President Trump will be decided by a jury of his peers in a criminal trial. Although New York is his home state, it has a strong Democratic presence as a deep blue state. Given his status as a Republican, this may not be an ideal trial ground for him. It remains to be seen how the jury selection process will proceed and whether it will be able to ensure impartiality and fairness throughout the trial.

Donald Trump, who has already announced his intention to run for the presidency and is currently leading in the polls for the Republican nomination, could potentially face off against current President Joe Biden in the 2024 US Presidential Election.
