Sri Lanka has taken a welcoming step by granting visa-free entry to visitors from seven countries, specifically India, China, Russia, Malaysia, Japan, Indonesia, and Thailand. This decision was implemented immediately and is part of a pilot project that will run until 31 March 2024. The approval was confirmed by Tourism Minister Harin Fernando and aims at simplifying travel arrangements for individuals from these countries, boosting the flow of tourists to Sri Lanka.
The key motivation behind this initiative is to revitalize the tourism sector in Sri Lanka, which had suffered due to the global COVID-19 pandemic. By waiving visa requirements for these seven countries, Sri Lanka aims to attract a higher number of tourists, with a goal of reaching five million tourist arrivals over the upcoming years. This move is also expected to save time and money for travelers who would otherwise need to go through the visa application process.
