The decision to hold the election on August 05th was taken after a meeting held at the Election Commission.
Election Commissioner Mahinda Deshapriya also noted that the Gazette Notification on the staging of the election had been signed and sent for printing.
Initially, after President Gotabaya Rajapaksha dissolved Parliament, the election was supposed to held on April 25 2020.
On 19 March, Chairman of the Election Commission revealed that the election will be postponed indefinitely due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Then it was scheduled to be held on June 20th, but it had to be postponed again due to COVID-10 situation in the country.
