It is good to borrow legislations from other countries which can ensure fairness and justice but the question remains the power given by that legislation to the individuals who are going to enact it. We should ask do we have the same infrastructure as the Singaporean Poilce in Sri Lankan Police. Have we implemented training programs which deals with emotional intelligence? Do we have body cams for our police officers like the developed police forces around the world so that the narrative of the police officer can be corborated in a court of law? Have we created a work environment for the Police officers in Sri Lanka so they can discjarge their duties free of stress? (There are time the police officers working for more than 12 hours at a stretch) Before we introduce a legislation for the namesake we should create the support system and infrastructure to implement the legislation we should not infringe the public. We shpuld also remember the policemen are also human and need a stressfree environment to work in. Before implementation create the proper infratsructure if not even having the best legislation in the world will not help the justice system because the power bestowed on the individual should know to use it correctly and justly.

We don’t need to borrow the worst from Singapore while refusing to borrow from its best. One day when we have a police who isn’t notorious for excessive violence and corruption, we can look at copying and pasting such laws. Right now, we need to look at what best practices we can learn from Singapore when it comes to economic growth, free trade and the rule of law.

Singapore uses tattoos to identify gangsters because back then the gangsters there had tattoos to indicate which gang they are from through numbers and logos. Sri Lankan gangsters do not do that. Also, our policemen are morons that will use this law as an opportunity to arrest plenty of innocent citizens.

This is utterly stupid. As someone who supports this government it’s disappointing to see unrealistic and unresearched laws coming in. The day our police force is honest and compassionate, we can implement such laws. The government must first police itself to the highest and set an example before doing this.

Dilantha Perera I'm not for Sri Lanka becoming another Singapore (separate discussion), BUT HAVING SAID THAT, if your neighbour has built a nice 2 story house on his land and you want to build one too, but his land is flat, and your adjoining land is on a slope, you think the same foundation will work for you? Even to arrive at the same end result mhcn, you need to understand your own circumstances and build around it to get there. Just because you want to get to where Singapore is, doesn't mean you can copy all that here and assume it will all work out here. We have historically different laws, different precedents, all that have developed over the years. The starting point is different and hence the solution must be different. You can't rote - apply the end result there to the starting point here and hope that will work.

Dilantha Perera, please check on the concerns raised by international watchdogs about warrantless and indefinite detentions carried out under these laws in Singapore. So by copy pasting these these will be most likely repeated in SL without the guardrails that are present in Singapore. Also in the case of use of Tattoos and dress styles to identify gang members are based on the structure of Chines and Japanese org criminal groups that operate in South East Asia. The Justice minister admitted thats not applicable in SL atm, so this was really copy pasted with no real review of its implications here. Thats the concerns that have been raised, specially concerns of how this law will be used on the ground by police.

What happened to Numbers.lk? They used to post genuine data, and now they are resorting to bad-faith government whitewashing. People want Singapore's clean economy and non-corrupt institutions, not a copy-paste penal code dropped into a broken system. Slapping a Ferrari steering wheel onto a busted three-wheeler does not turn it into a Ferrari, and no amount of pretty graphics from Numbers.lk will make a police state law look like economic development.
