The ferry service was initially launched in October 2023 but was limited to 4 trips, likely due to high operational costs and fees. To address this issue, now the Government of India has decided to bear the cost of applicable taxes and other charges, amounting to over 25 million LKR per month for a period of one year.
This time, the service is expected to continue running as preparations have been made to ensure a more organized operation. The company operating the ferry has established a website (sailindsri.com) and an app for bookings. Additionally, the Kankesanthurai (KKS) port in Sri Lanka has been upgraded with minimal facilities to facilitate the passenger ferry service, including all necessary border services, which were not up to the required level in 2023.
According to the booking website, the inaugural trip from India to Sri Lanka is set for May 13th, while the first return journey from Sri Lanka to India will take place on May 16th. Fares for the journey from Jaffna to India start at 16,500 LKR, and trips from India to Sri Lanka begin at 17,846 LKR.
