The platform, accessible via https://pravesha.lk/en, allows passengers to buy tickets online using credit or debit cards. Once purchased, e-tickets are sent via SMS or email and can be validated at railway stations using QR codes. This service aims to reduce the reliance on physical tickets.
Currently, the cost of producing physical tickets ranges between Rs. 6.50 and Rs. 10 each for the railway department. The shift to e-tickets is expected to be a cost-effective measure for the department, though the ticket price for passengers remains unchanged.
Sri Lanka Railways has ensured that no additional charges are imposed for using the e-ticketing service, meaning commuters pay the same price whether they choose paper or electronic tickets. The Pravesha platform represents a significant step forward in modernizing the country's railway system, offering passengers a more convenient and efficient way to secure their train tickets.
It’s important to note that Pravesha is specifically tailored for commuter trains. For long-distance journeys requiring seat reservations, passengers should continue to use the existing platform at https://seatreservation.railway.gov.lk/.
