We introduced QR based fuel rationing again "as a precaution after authorities observed fuel stockpiling, panic buying, and long queues at filling stations." - The SL 🇱🇰 Government

How much did demand actually increase?

⭕ According to the CPC Chairman, it is not 2x or 3x. It is just a 21% increase.

⭕ Sri Lanka increased fuel prices by only 8% following the crisis, and current prices remain about 35% (around Rs.150) below the all time highs reported in 2022.

⭕ The decision to introduce fuel rationing instead of using price adjustments to manage the increase in demand will send the country into unnecessary chaos and disrupt the entire economy and everyday life.

⭕ From small businesses to three wheel drivers, doctors, professionals and ordinary citizens, the impact will spread across all sectors (sp. tourism, agriculture, manufacturing etc), turning what was essentially a manageable demand increase into a much wider economic problem.

⭕ Worst of all, this will not reduce demand in the short term. The system creates a necessity for every vehicle to visit a fuel station at least once, while many people may begin keeping fuel buffers in their vehicles just in case. This could increase overall demand and lead to longer queues in the short term. It also makes the country more prone to future crises, as people may rush to hoard fuel at the slightest sign of any disruption.

⭕The NPP government has so far been miles ahead of previous governments when it comes to consequential decisions. However, given this set of facts, this is one of the worst economic and political decisions taken by the NPP government, with the potential to undo much of the good they have done and potentially send the country into an economic depression.

  1. QR system is the correct way to go or there will be illegal fuel hoarding which will create an unnecessary demand & put pressure on our stocks.

  3. Do what Australia did Increase the price Those who contribute to the economy more are capable of buying And those who really want will sacrifice other spending and buy fuel

  4. Fuel rationing is important, but the government seems to have introduced the system without a proper plan or testing. The quotas appear to have been set without assessing the ground reality. The government should have determined quotas based on accurate data and ground reality.

  6. Authors calculation doesn't take into account further escalations in middle east situation. With irrationality governing US regime, further missteps can end up significant and permanent damages to global oil infrastructure (more than 20% of global supply) which can have severe impacts on global commodity pricing, Sri Lankan remittances and tourism. Which can lead to another balance of payment crisis. The country has to reduce fuel consumption until horizon is clear. That said, may be government can designate certain fuel stations for unrationed fuel pumpkin but at a higher price, which reflects current market crude pricing + premiums. Those who can afford can pump there, effectively reducing panik buying from those who can afford, and as an wealth transfer from wealthy to the poor.

  8. Increase in prices would spiral into an inflation that you would then blame on Govt

Lakshan Wickrema From an economic perspective, fuel rationing will have a far greater inflationary impact than a price increase. Price adjustments help balance supply and demand through market mechanisms, whereas rationing distorts normal market functioning, creates shortages, encourages ad hoc pricing, and disrupts economic activity, all of which can place stronger upward pressure on prices across the economy. Just go to the road and ask the price of a tuk tuk ride to a place you usually travel. You will have first hand experience, or simply wait a couple of days and watch vegetable prices.

    2. Numbers.lk From an economic perspective this will be correct if you consider non-essential goods. Fuel has an inelastic demand. Eventhough price has the demand reduction is less. Price increase will have an immediate effect on the B2B segment as well. On another note, if there’s no rationing there will be a big black market for fuel.

  9. If they increased the prices to reflect the market conditions, the inflation will increase and those who now say prices should be increased will then say inflation is bad and people are suffering 🙈 So lets just follow the middle road - win-win for all 😉
