EVs, ICE vehicles, and energy

⭕ EVs are 3x to 4x more efficient than ICE vehicles.

⭕ If you took a full tanker of fuel and burned it in Sri Lanka’s 🇱🇰 most expensive, least efficient thermal power plant to charge EVs, those EVs would still travel double the distance of petrol cars using that same tanker of fuel.

  1. Exactly. De-Indianise this country and make it resplendent again. Look at China and their electric vehicles, public transport and energy generation. It can easily be done here. The trouble is the moron Indian appeasing politicians of the last 16 years who have no vision.

  2. 3X 4X efficiency definitely not like where on earth did you do those numbers.2X efficiency yes more than possible.

  • The general rule is if you are a light user, getting an ICE vehicle is better for the environment than getting an EV. For Moderate or above use, EV is good for the environment, especially if you do solar charging.

  • "So many automobile experts and power experts from the 19th century! You may go extinct, it's ok and it's the need of the world but don't hinder the progression of the world towards the future that should be. Your illusions are simply irrelevant, electric mobility is the future, and the transition to fuel cell EVs must be accelerated and catalysed with battery EVs despite your whining."

  • well it's all good in theory. but the fact is most vehicles are either on the road or away from homes during this solar peak time. So charging during day time is not the most practical option for majority of users. this is why charging mostly happens at night when vehicles are parked for the day. You can't ask people to pay more money and sacrifice flexibility. If you really really want this you would have to make solar power and battery storage a packaged deal with a EV. And we know how much that is going to cost. So until the grid goes primarily renewable, in the short term the best solution is still the Hybrids and Plugin Hybrids with efficient engines.

    1. Bhanuka Yes indeed! At the end of the post it suggests moving to EV from ICE with reduced tax at once as if it is something to be done overnight. Not a practical short term solution

  • But they charge at the peak hours. Until govt force peak off peak billing it’s not going to happen.

  • Bring in Time-of-Use (ToU) pricing. You can't push customers to use off peaks unless you introduce incentives and penalties. + It will push solar PV adopters to install battery storages together with their PV system. TOU is the key !

  • Stop posting bullshit. No way those numbers are anywhere near correct. Once the warranty goes out and EV subsidies go away, EV’s will be an endless money pit in SL.

    7 months agoLikes:3
    1. Asanka Amarasinghe what subsidies? You are making it up as you go. People said the same thing about hybrid 16 years ago. Now they want to buy these first models. Research suggests that the new EV batteries will last longer than the bodywork. Even the old ones are 10 years old and doing well. Saying the same thing again and again still doesn't make it true

    2. James Caldwell EV’s are given a tax break right? So how is that not a subsidy? Most countries that provided tax breaks for EV’s are rolling back those breaks. Countries that offered less congestion charges etc… for EV’s are rolling them back. Yeah, research and real world are 2 different things- and any battery degrades over time - so a 500KM range today is 400 in 10 years and just 300 in 5 years after! EV’s are most depreciating assets for a reason! Even if none of above is true, these numbers are still overestimated dreaming!

    3. Most countries are not offering tax breaks. Quite the opposite is true. The biggest EV manufacturer in the world,BYD, is penalised by higher tariffs in North America, which keeps them out of, and in Europe. This to ensure that local manufacturers are not forced out of the market. Only in the UK is that not the case but even here the subsidies which do exist exclude Chinese cars. I’m in Sri Lanka and bought one because despite the very high tax I thought it was better value for money than the like of Toyota. I am very happy with the choice especially as I use electricity from solar. 20 years from now I will not care anyway! As I said already EV batteries will probably last many years, but even if they do give up in 10 years the new generation of batteries will be fine replacements.

  • Even if an EV charges by fossil fuel It will still be more beneficial to the economy and environment than ICE! Read how in the Sri Lankan context.... https://www.facebook.com/share/p/1Cn2pnhC6K/

    1. Sujeeva Premaratne Historically Sri Lankan vehicles have run for 40 plus years. Future consumer behavior is not going to be any different and No EV will ever last that long. Consequently the market value also reflects the same. That being said, EV is a good choice for a wealthy buyer but a very poor choice for a middle class buyer in Sri Lanka.

      7 months agoLikes:7
    2. Umar Irfan exactly. Everybody’s for EV’s until warranty runs out. When it inevitably comes to replacing a 50-70kw battery on own dime paying 100% tax, the whole thing becomes a write off or a endless money pit. We are seeing this influx of Chinese manufacturers who have never been on the vehicle market and not playing a long game and operating at razor thin margins- one bump in the road and they close up shop, making 10-20M vehicle a fancy road block!

  • Define efficient? Yes they are cheaper to maintain but they are also expensive to buy if you want to buy a GOOD EV vehicle. Plus our electricity charges are high here unless you have solar the cost will more or less be the same. Durability is yet unknown. iCE have passed down from generation to generation. We are yet to see EV do this. One thing I would say is EV are more environmental friendly, no noise or air pollution and better for the environment and climate. I would personally like to see 50 50 combination of ICe and EV

    2. Tariq Starlord Search for thermal efficiency and you'll find out the energy loss; even one of THE best hybrids are maximum 40% thermally efficient. A commercial electricity generator can easily hit 50percent thermal efficiency to generate power at high loads of 70-80 percent. Google is free 🙂 Edit : generator efficiency

      7 months agoLikes:1
    3. Tariq Starlord some early EVs like the Nissan Leafs didn’t have liquid cooling in their batteries, which led to a lot of bad reputation around EV battery durability. That’s been fixed in every other EV model out there. https://insideevs.com/news/762326/new-nissan-leaf-battery-cooling-power-range/

    4. Lasiru Maheerathna nope, the most efficient engines ever made (at laboratory conditions) are at best 60% efficient. Generators are extensions of engines- so, a generator will never be 80% efficient even after recovering energy losses by alternative means. What part of google told you generators exist at 80% efficiency?

    5. Asanka Amarasinghe let’s say that the generators are 50 percent efficient, it’s still efficient than a hybrid. This was my bad, I was too sleepy when I typed this. (Wanted to say has maximal efficiency at 70-80 percent load)
