400 vehicles stuck at Sri Lanka 🇱🇰 Customs, Importers warn of price hike

⭕ Over 400 vehicles have been held at Sri Lanka 🇱🇰 Customs for over 20 days due to import regulation issues

⭕ The requirement to specify production year or exact manufacturing date has made compliance difficult for importers

⭕ Demurrage charges during the delay will drive up vehicle prices by Rs. 40,000 to Rs. 50,000

⭕ Importers are urging the government to intervene immediately to resolve the issue and prevent price hikes

⭕ The Vehicle Importers Association of Sri Lanka 🇱🇰 is calling for further deliberation on the import regulations decision

  1. It's the fault of the VIA and its members. Every vehicle after 1981 has a VIN - which has year of manufacture, manufacturer, brand, engine type etc, name of assembly plant and a serial# - with these, in minutes, you can find the exact date it entered and exited the assembly line and every step in between. Importers who pass on the demurrage, without rightly reducing from their (all ready excessive) margins - should not be allowed to survive - and hopefully market forces will be enough to ensure that. Time to put real pressure on all these cabals that have worked against the interests of Sri Lanka and its citizens
