🇱🇰 Sri Lanka’s annual childbirths fell 36.2% from 2015 to 2025

⭕ Sri Lanka recorded 214,570 childbirths in 2025, down from 336,097 in 2015.

⭕ Between 2019 and 2025, annual childbirths fell by 104,440, or about 33%.

⭕ The government linked the decline to later and fewer marriages, increased separation and divorce, delayed family formation, and rising financial pressure from living, housing, education and childcare costs.

  19. As a demographer, I view this decline in annual births as a result of multiple interconnected social, economic, and demographic changes rather than a single factor. Economic pressures, rising costs of living, housing, education and childcare expenses certainly influence fertility decisions. However, changes in marriage patterns, delayed family formation, increased individualism, changing aspirations, greater focus on education and careers, and work-life challenges also play important roles. Many young people today are making more conscious decisions about the timing and size of their families based on their personal goals, economic security, and quality of life expectations. Therefore, addressing declining births requires a broader approach that supports young people through stable employment, affordable housing, childcare facilities, and policies that enable a better balance between family and personal aspirations.

    1. Neranjala Sumathipala yes. And the main part is the surplus money. Very few can afford a child. Earlier one person's salary was enough to manage the whole family. And raising a child is not among their personal goals.

    2. Suraj Suresh Kannan I agree that economic capacity is an important factor influencing fertility decisions. However, from a demographic perspective, low birth rates are shaped by a combination of economic, social, and cultural changes. Today, beyond financial affordability, people’s aspirations, career priorities, individual choices, changing family values, and expectations about quality of life also influence decisions about having children. Therefore, it is important to understand fertility decline as a broader social transformation rather than only an economic issue.
