Sri Lanka’s 🇱🇰 Marriages Drop 28% Since 2010

⭕ Registered marriages in Sri Lanka fell from 200,985 in 2010 to 144,182 in 2025, a decline of about 28%.

⭕ The decline is commonly linked to later marriages, as more young adults prioritize education, careers and financial stability.

⭕ Rising housing, food, rent and wedding costs have made marriage less affordable for many couples.

⭕ Economic uncertainty, weak income growth and insecure employment have also encouraged people to delay marriage.

  17. How can they afford to have a wedding. When there's a 30% tax on the food bill. Apart from other taxes on expenses. For example if the hotel charges 7000/= Per head for dinner or lunch. 100 invitees 7000x100= 700000. Tax amounts to RS.210,000/=

    1. Egoclothingsl LK It USED to be. Not anymore. If it were the "only purpose," birth rates should go up as quality of life increases (I'm talking about developed countries), but they don't.

    2. Egoclothingsl LK Man I love that quote, I was flabbergasted when I first heard it on a reel fr. I'm not denying the fact that reproduction isn't our basic instincts. It's just that we've been suppressing almost every natural thing we'd be doing as animals.

  23. Actually that's good news, young people are questioning life and are being more educated into having other options, marriage is not the only way to live a life

    3 months agoLikes:3
    1. Dominicus Maratus I get that marriage is not the only way to live a meaningful life, thats true. But marriage and having children gives you a chance to create a impact that can continue long after your gone. The morals, knowledge, character and culture you teach your children can be passed down to their children too. Thats how families can influence humanity over generations. Of course, not everyone will marry or have children, and that doesnt mean their life has no meaning. But if someone avoids responsibility only to chase comfort and desires, then what are they really leaving behind? And when you think about it, thousands of people in your bloodline survived, struggled and sacrificed for you to exist. So ending that line without even thinking about it is kind of sad honestly.

    2. Adnan Azmi industrial revolutions are totally rendering obsolete all the "morals, knowledge, character and culture" that you mentioned...a new world is morphing and at accelerating pace, the only good thing younger people can do is to question EVERYTHING: their parents, culture, society, the economy etc...and build something new out of it.

    3. Critical thinking you mean? Of course I agree with you on the importance of critical thinking Truth is objective though.

  25. Its also that the new generation- Gen Z is less likely to be committed in marriage, they’re more into independence and freedom so they often overlook marriage, engage only in casual relationships which seldom grow towards marrying.
