Sri Lanka to downsize military by 2030 with 100,000 Army personnel, 40,000 Navy, and 18,000 Air Force

⭕ Sri Lanka 🇱🇰 will reduce its military size, with the Army decreasing to 100,000 personnel by 2030

⭕ The Navy will be reduced to 40,000 personnel and the Air Force to 18,000, as part of a broader effort to modernize Sri Lanka’s 🇱🇰 defence forces

⭕ President Anura Kumara Dissanayake stated that the military will become more technically advanced despite the reduction in size

⭕ The current military equipment is aging, with many aircraft and weapons nearing expiration, requiring special training for Navy personnel to operate old vessels

⭕ The President criticized the practice of granting service extensions to military leaders and the ineffective Chief of Defence Staff role often given to subordinates or loyalists

  1. Excellent move. Should have been downsized a long time ago actually since the conflict ended in 2009. No point in wasting public funds maintaining a large defense force. Remember it's about the quality not quantity.
