🌾 Sri Lanka’s Paddy Yield: 1982 vs 2023 🇱🇰

📅 1982: 4.44 tons/ha (66 bushels/acre) 📅 2023: 4.22 tons/ha (62.75 bushels/acre)

💡 in last 40+ years, Yield haven't changed.

Meanwhile:

  • 🇦🇺 Australia: 10.0 tons/ha
  • 🇪🇬 Egypt: 9.0 tons/ha
  • 🇺🇸 USA: 8.0 tons/ha
  • 🇨🇳 China: 7.15 tons/ha S

Sri Lanka has a dedicated Rice Research and Development Institute (RRDI). Wondering, What has it achieved in 40+ years? 🤔

#SriLanka #Rice (1 ton/hectare = 14.87 bushels/acre.)

  3. They are dead sleep, Not only paddy research others like coconut, rubber and tea. Wasting public money indeed.

  4. They are calling out RRDI, a dedicated and really hard working institute. they have set up three stations to research varieties that suite different paddy growing regions. The best yielding crop they got in Vavuniya is 13tons per Ha, among the highest anywhere in the world. not yet commercially viable due to higher cost of seeds. But in Hambantota, farmers yield 12 tons regularly, thanks to the research and development ot RRDI. Not only yield, they research on quality as well. Keeri Samba is a variety that is created through their research. it already accounts for about 20% of the harvest. On what grounds is this page calling out RRDI?

  7. I strongly belive that RRDI introduced new paddy varieties. But it is difficult to get seed pady in Northern Sri Lanka where farmers are given very little choice of seed paddy. In jaffna only seed paddy sold were BG 406 (https://doa.gov.lk/rrdi_rice_bg406/), AT 362(https://doa.gov.lk/rrdi_rice_at362/). I had saline paddy land BG 369 (https://doa.gov.lk/rrdi_rice_bg369/) or AT 354 (https://doa.gov.lk/rrdi_rice_at354/) would have performed better but I cultivated BG310 (https://doa.gov.lk/rrdi_rice_bg310/) ended in poor yield than AT 354 or BG 369. Seed paddy distribution should be sorted out. They should accept advance payment from the farmers if they want to cultivate some other varieties. There is no need to import rice if the goverment sort out this issue.

    1. Regunathan Umapathy bg 310 is a 3month age group variety. Usually yields become lower when age is short. That may be the reason. In addition, the department has no adequate funding or resources to generate all required seed paddy. We only produce less than 20% of the seed requirement. All other quantity is produced by farmers. Further, for farmers to get certified seed paddy, rice seeds have to go through 2year multiplication period. We RRDI produce breeder seeds with highest purity in one season. Then seed farms multiply them to produce foundation seeds next season. Then again multiplied in the third season to produce registered seeds. During forth season again multiplied to produce registered seeds mostly by farmers. Each season seeds are multiplied to produce 40 times seed lot for the next step. So, what you grow were started production 2 years back. For this process government spends a whole lot of money. But if farmers do not grow them after 2 years, all this investment will be useless. That happens. Farmers do not start cultivation on time. So they skip common 3.5 month varieties and look for 3 month variety, which might not be available amply. In this, farmers also have to plan their cultivation. They should decide the variety they need to grow. And plan correct time of cultivation during the season. If they need a certain variety, inform the provincial department of agriculture about it. provincial department compile your requirement and send it to us so that we produce required small quantity of breeder seeds. If farmers do not tell us what they need, we can not produce them and just make them a waste. So it is a two way commitment. We are there for farmers. So always have a good connection with us. Let us know your requirement. In addition to all these information, we encourage farmers to produce your own seeds as well. You know what you grow. What the farmers in your area prefer. So we can help you to start a seed paddy production. All technical guidence can be requested from RRDI. We are here to support you always. Please do not hesitate to contact RRDI.

    2. Jayani Wathukarage thanks for the detail promptly reply. I own two paddy fields one of the suffers with soil salinity (Ariyalai East, Jaffna) for that I cultivated BG 310. Though I searched 3.5 months paddy that can withstand soil salinity varieties like AT 354 or BG 369 but I couldn't get it though Paranthan government seed paddy sales centre (Many years ago I got AT354 from Paranthan that gave good yield) or through private seed sellers. I got BG 310 from Murusumoddai closer to Paranthan (https://www.openstreetmap.org/node/11247134136) Last year monsoon was started around 8 Oct 2024 as continuous 5 days was predicited by https://www.ventusky.com/?p=8.82;81.97;7&l=rain-ac (using GFS, ICON weather models). BG 310 grown well till due to heavy rain breach bund somewhere around 26-27 nov 2024. BG 310 matured before other paddy fields. One of the problem happened that the combined harvester was not ready by that time further reduce my harvest. Also another rain came during the harvest time and the combined harverstor seems to extracting paddy when the paddy is dry. An engineer suggested I should install flap gate (https://www.bing.com/images/search?q=Flap%20Gate&first=1) so that excess rain water goes through it but blocks water from other direction (in my case stops salinity water to the paddy field but allows excess rain water from the paddy field). I am looking for 3.5 months variety that withstand soil salinity for this year Maha season cultivation and I will try to install Flap gate to see if I hope to get good harvest this year onwards.

  8. Since 1952 Sri Lanka has achieved 6 times yield hike by 2021. In 2021 our average yield was 4.8 m per ha . It seconded only to Bangladesh, which was 4.88., in the South Asia . You can’t compare yield values obtained in Japan China or USA which experience long day days . RRDI has done a wonderful job . With the over night decision of converting the country to organic our average yields when down up to 2.29 Mt per ha. We have been unable to achieve the previous yield level so far . understand the disaster that has taken place . The paddy yield can be increased with the Yaya package . As an example one study done in many locations under my direct supervision in 2022/23 produced yield levels from 6 mt to 13 mt per ha. In selected locations thought the country. Farmers are not using inputs sufficiently. A few natural calamities had a bad effect on yield recently but that was also less than 5 % in the recent past. Soil fertility, correct variety and good quality seeds do a lot . Egypt yield levels are very high . When our varieties were grown there they were giving 12 mt per ha. I have seen those data . But when their varieties or Japanese or Chinese or Bangladesh varieties are grown here they do give yields lower than our varieties. I have personally supervised such trials. We have to employ the yaya package developed by RRDI if we want to increase yields . The increasing National paddy yield is the main task of the extension divions of DoA and PDoA and MASL. Around 65% of the paddy cultivated area are coming under the Provincial setup , which is literally beyond the control of the Minstry of Agriculture . Mahaweli are is one / 8 in maha and 1/5 Yala season . Only this time MASL is under the Ministry of Agriculture otherwise literally that extent is out of the control of the MoA . According to to 13th amendment the MoA can’t t interfere with paddy extension in Provincial areas though it happens on friendly terms now. Mandate of the RRDI is to develop teachnologies and initial dissemination . The dissemination comes on the shoulders of the Extension Divison of the DoA and PDoA. To deploy a productivity improvement programme it is essential that the DoA , Provincial and MASL areas should be taken together . Department of Agrarian service did not dissolve thier powers to the provincial councils. A similar thing should be done or governed by a one body . I don’t know how feasible it is . A yaya programme is must . Regarding the quality seed production the initial breeder seed production is more than enough to cover the total paddy area in the country, which is monitored by the seed certification service and the seed and planting materials division of the DoA . However, the final out turn of quality seeds to the farmers remain only 18% due to various reasons which are out of the control of these two entities . This should be improved. When paddy is harvested 20 kg of N , 17 kg of P and 3 kg of K are removed . If it is 5 Mt per hectare this will be 5 fold . Therefore the nutrient supply should be assured and a kind of subsidy or a programme should be operated . Even in India water and electricity are free for farming . RRDI has been maintaining total organic , no fertilizer, only chemical fertilizer and organic plus chemical fertilizer fields for more than 14 years . The best yikes has always been from organic matter addition plus chemical fertilizers. As very correctly mention the problem lies with deficiencies in teacnolgy dissemination and adaptation by farmers . If we address these two we can have a jump start Thanks One of former Director of RRDI

  10. A good example where numbers.lk has manipulated numbers to dish out a story that is slightly biased. However, this doesn't imply that our paddy sector is devoid of issues. There is plenty of room for improvement.

  11. In Hambantota, yields range from 6 to 7 tons per hectare, indicating that the arid zone is most suitable for high-yield paddy cultivation. Countries like the USA, China, Egypt, and Australia, where paddy cultivation is also practiced in arid zones through irrigation.

  15. It seems these manipulated numbers. the dry zone produces 5.7 tons per ha at minimum in Maha season. Some yield as high as 12 tons/ha. wet zone has only one crop typically. so dividing the total annual yield per total ha is inaccurate as there are many complexities.

  16. Wrong information. Looks like a comparison of maximum yield in 1982 with the average yield in 2024. We never had 4T/Ha average yield in 1980s in Sri Lanka. There is definitely a significant increase in average yield levels but important question will be at what cost that we achieved the said yield increase.
