📱 TRCSL to Ban Non-Registered Mobile Devices from Local Networks Effective January 29, 2025 🇱🇰

Sri Lanka 🇱🇰 will enforce an International Mobile Equipment Identity (IMEI) registration system starting January 29, 2025, to curb the use of unregistered devices.

⭕ All mobile phones, tablets, and SIM-enabled devices must have a TRCSL-approved IMEI.

⭕ Non-registered devices will be blocked from all local networks after the deadline.

⭕ Devices already connected to local networks before January 28, 2025, will not be affected.

⭕ Travelers importing or carrying devices into the country must register them through an online clearance system, which will require approvals from TRCSL, Sri Lanka Customs, and other government bodies.

📩 To verify your device, SMS IMEI <15-digit number> to 1909. Ensure compliance before purchasing.

    2. Randiya Fernando ..will require approvals from TRCSL, Sri Lanka Customs and OTHER government institutes.. Higher the number of institutes, lower the interest to do business. If it is just Customs, like other import goods, then fine. But this?

  15. Bureaucracy at the max. Why can’t the network collect the tax when the new phone is connected, and remit it to the government. Why fill forms and letters? Stupidity at its finest!

  18. What happens to individuals currently abroad for an extended period who have purchased new mobile devices and are using them with Sri Lankan SIM cards while roaming? Will they be able to return to Sri Lanka and continue using their devices on local networks without registering with TRCSL, or will registration be required upon their return?

  20. What about tourists - an option is tourist sim ? Or what about Sri Lankan people working abroad coming back. Have they implemented a system to let those people use services in case of blocks.

Roshan D Fernando Networks can collaborate with TRCSL to develop tourist-specific packages that are not impacted by this requirement.

    2. Numbers.lk then foreigners have to goto operator kiosk and do these registrations. Still a big hassle.

    3. Roshan D Fernando First thing when a person goes to another country is to buy a sim and a matching package, if they do not have roaming supported esims. How it is a additional hussle 🥱

    4. Kelum Bandara Did you read the original post? It is about registering IMEI of the phone with TRCSL?

    5. Roshan D Fernando I read it well though, So you are assuming TRCSL can not authorize certain IMEIs using set of foreigner given sims 🫠🙃
