Sri Lanka’s 🇱🇰 Digital Dream Stuck at the @PayPal/@stripe Gate

The single biggest leap Sri Lanka’s 🇱🇰 digital economy can make isn’t rolling out 5G or chasing AI, it’s giving Sri Lankan people the power to monetize digital products by easily receiving payments via PayPal, Stripe, and other global platforms.

⭕ Yet for over a decade, successive governments have failed to deliver access to this basic digital infrastructure. Outdated regulations, bureaucratic inertia, and protectionist banks have choked our freelancers and startups—while the rest of the world surges ahead.

⭕ Look at Stripe then and now, It's now valued at over $90 billion+ and processing $1.4 trillion annually, is integrated with nearly every major digital platform. Imagine if Sri Lanka had moved forward with this in 2016—where would our digital economy be today?

  1. Talking about a 30 billion digital economy by 2030, but it's sad to see that in 2026, we still don't have access to these major platforms. Dreams without actions are just dreams! Anura Kumara Dissanayake

  3. I raised this not once, but twice, with the CBSL Governor, and I’ve also questioned several ministers about it publicly. All to no avail.
