  1. ජැක් ස්පැරෝ probably us doesn't buy any thing from afganistan

  2. ජැක් ස්පැරෝ The US's trade deficit with Afghanistan must be negligible because the US doesn't import much from there. The same goes for the small African nations on the list that received a 15% tariff.

  • Isn't this like an arbitrage opportunity for Sri Lanka.? Importing goods from countries which have higher tariffs to sl do a small cutting or Making charge in sl and sell it to the USA? Also vice versa? Just asking.?

Chiranga Jayasekera No tariffs are usually determined by the country of origin rather than the country of export, and there are established rules for ascertaining origin. For example, authorities closely monitor this whenever a free-trade agreement is in effect between two countries.

    5. Chiranga Jayasekera The other problem is our modern era political class since around the 1970s onwards have imposed high tariffs on imports and sky high costs of doing business in general. Which has tanked our country versus SE/East Asia and will probably negate any profit an entrepreneur might make. If we had any sense we'd get rid of all these tariffs. Singapore for instance is pretty much open to importing anything. And runs a high surplus. That's what Ceylon used to have.
