🇱🇰 Sri Lanka Strips Ex-Presidents of Benefits - Parliament Votes 151–1

⭕ Pension is now the only benefit left for retired presidents. It ends upon their death; spouses do not receive it.

⭕ According to Minister Ananda Wijepala, the government spent Rs. 98.5 million in 2024 on benefits for 5 ex-presidents and 1 widow.

👉 Average = Rs. 1.37 million per month per president/widow.

⭕ For comparison, a single Parliament sitting costs about Rs. 50 million today (Rs. 31.2 million in 2022).

⭕ Rather than encouraging dignified retirement, this incentivizes maximizing personal gain while in office.

⭕ When no post-office dignity is guaranteed, the temptation to extract benefits while in power increases dramatically.

⭕ The annual Rs. 98.5 million saved is minuscule compared to the long-term cost to Sri Lanka, which could far exceed these savings.

⭕ Good populist politics but bad long-term policy.

Exactly why people need to be electing better people and strengthen the legal framework

  • Numbers.lk So what's your suggestion? Maximizing benefits after the retirement so they won't steal anything while in power? What a dumb fuck you are 😂 Be somewhat logical without being a ret#drd when running a page. So Mahinda Rajapaksa and his gang didn't steal anything? 🤔

  • Numbers.lk, let’s stop pretending that giving all these incentives to our politicians all this time stopped them from engaging in corruption. Public service should absolutely be adequately compensated I agree, but assuming that politicans’ level of corruption is inversely proportional to their pay is not borne out by reality, as Sri Lanka’s recent political history amply demonstrates.

  • We would appreciate a detailed breakdown of the costs of the parliament sitting, as it would provide valuable insights into the allocation of funds and enhance our understanding of the expenses incurred.

  • From today we are a prosperous country and we can enjoy the benefits of these cost savings

  • Well. This is a biased opinion. And good example of how not to quantity everything. Get the full benefits breakdown not only the ones that helps you to justify your own conclusion.

    1. And the logic. Let us give them more money afterwards so that they won’t steal while they are in the office. Using the same logic whats stopping them from stealing money while they are in office? Two different problems. Right? And you thought we wouldn’t notice 😂

  • Numbers.lk What exactly is your logic here? Just because one parliament sitting cost ~50 mil(this too, not verified), it's pointless to save ~98+mil annually? 🤣 You feeling sad? :(

    4. Afzal coz you wanna justify the shit. Waste state funds unnecessary to expecting politicians to reduce corruptions in their term.? That’s the most stupidest thing I ever heard bro 💔 That knowing all the recent presidents are in asian rankings for most corrupted politicians & richest politicians 🙉 Disappointed 💔

  • Is this average 1.37 million per month cost includes the salaries of ~100 of service staff allocated to the ex president? Probably not. It doesn’t add up. Those staff members can allocated to their real jobs now.

  • For comparison , this 14 year Dutch ( Netherlands ) PM Mark Rutte leaving his office last year. He was a teacher and one period per week he continue teaching while he was at office. He was said to be visiting a small shop for his breakfast and only stopped the habbit when PM security got info about security threats. Just for the info, if any bayyas feel that he is not an important person , he is currently the secretary general of NATO. This is how leaders of developed countries behave. link in the reply
