🇱🇰 3 Months, No Policy — E-Commerce Still in Limbo

⭕ It has been over 3 months since the government supposedly began working on a new framework for taxing and releasing e-commerce goods.

⭕ As usual with the Department of Trade and Investment policies & Dept of Customs, nothing has materialized.

⭕ Meanwhile, 🇨🇳 AliExpress continues to impose arbitrary taxes on goods electronic parts, circuit components, and educational items that cannot be sourced elsewhere.

⭕ The worst part is that there is no cross-check mechanism between what customers pay as “taxes” and what intermediaries declare to customs — meaning much of the changed fees as "taxes" never reaches government coffers.

  2. Yes. Sadly, from my (distant) perspective, this government seems to be a lot of talk but very low on the "action" .... Basically, nobody in the government is actually accountable for anything; so nothing ever gets done as they are all waiting for the "other guy" to do it.

  15. I'm not anti-NPP and not against everything they do, but this is one of the worst things they've done. Chathuranga seems to have bitten more than he can chew, and we are the ones suffocating for it.

  23. The standard and selection standard shipping methods used to collect all orders and ship individual orders in one shipment, then get the items released based on weight (800/- tax per kilo IIRC) The issue was that bulk importers abused this system and the government lost tax revenues by the bucketload so they stopped this "bulk taxing scheme" and started to tax based on HS code so every item gets charged the correct tax amount (for example electronic items gets 27.5% charged as tax, car parts 36% etc) Aliexpress would include this amount as shipping or as tax seperately . Although the tax amount seems unfair on aliexpress side it could be due to the adding up of extra handling cost for the local courier companies and also for their shipping lines . This happens for items that likely exceed about 200g (from my exp). I have attached how much documents has been attached to a recent order of 1.6$ item which had another 10$ shipping cost. the bulk ordering people will still can keep their costs low since they can customize their order shipping options.but when reselling they will again match the platform prices making huge profits. so finally its the end customer that gets ripped of from all this drama . SL Government should introduce a de minimis exemption scheme as suggested by Harsha de Silva for personal imports and get AliExpress to stop charging this massively inflated prepaid tax, this is getting way out of hand . Recently saw where a custom officer got speechless when asked about the overall tax income gain they got with the new scheme in front of COPE lol . https://vt.tiktok.com/ZSyB4qbGF/
